A four-door Porsche prototype died in 1992Two decades before the Panamera arrived, Porsche built a four-door prototype called Project 989 under engineering chief Ulrich Bez, complete with a front-mounted 4.2 litre V8. Falling 928 sales and Bez's departure killed the programme in January 1992, and the idea sat shelved until the 970 finally put a four-door Porsche into production in 2009.

Its roofline was drawn tall enough for one very tall bossPersistent industry lore holds that the Panamera's arched, controversial roofline was drawn tall enough to give then Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking, all 193 centimetres of him, proper headroom in the back seat. Whatever the real reason, that same silhouette earned the car years of hunchback jokes from the motoring press after its 2009 Shanghai debut.

Performance Package

The Panamera S carries the 4.8 V8 the platform deserved, and it responds properly to breathing work. Fabspeed's package pairs the Maxflo exhaust and resonator bypass X-pipe with a competition intake and matched ECU tune, waking the V8 up at both ends without making it tiresome on a long run.
