The first rear-drive Alfa saloon in decadesThe Giulia's Giorgio platform gave Alfa Romeo its first mass-market, longitudinal-engine, rear-wheel-drive saloon since the 75 went out of production in 1992. That is a genuinely long gap for a brand built on that layout.

Its platform was built by a secret ex-Ferrari skunkworksAlfa Romeo hired former Ferrari engineer Philippe Krief to lead the Giulia's development, and he assembled a hidden team of ex-Ferrari and Maserati engineers in Modena, kept apart from Fiat's shared parts bin. Working to a deadline of under three years, the group grew from a handful of engineers to roughly 800 people before the Giorgio platform reached production.
