An ECU reflash for the later, 1996-1998 Porsche 993 Carrera, aimed at eliminating the flat spot below 4,000rpm and sharpening throttle response by reprogramming fuel, ignition and boost tables. Fabspeed reports a significant gain in low and mid-range torque, enough that some owners of 1994-1995 cars have described the difference as feeling stronger than a 993. This isn't a physical part: you send in your ECU for reprogramming and receive it back tuned, with no check-engine light triggered. Tuning defaults to 91 (95 RON) octane, with a 93 (98 RON) octane program available on request. Later 993s use a flashable ECU tune; earlier 1994-1995 cars and any OTP-coded ECU need the OTP tuner option instead.

Will this trigger a check engine light?

No, Fabspeed says its chips are designed not to trigger the check engine light.

Which option should I choose?

Choose Standard ECU if your 1996-1998 car runs a normal flashable ECU, or OTP ECU if your factory ECU carries an OTP part number sticker (993.618.604.00, .01 or .02) or is drive-block equipped. Flashable but non-OBD2 ECUs (993.618.604.10, .11 or .81) still fall under the Standard option. Check the sticker on your factory ECU before ordering if you're unsure which you have.

Who installs it?
