Its heart began life in a LamborghiniThe 5.2-litre FSI V10 shares its bore, stroke, capacity and compression ratio with the unit powering the contemporary Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, though Audi retuned the injectors, manifolds and engine management for smoother, more civilised delivery. Both versions are cast and assembled at Audi's engine plant in Gyor, Hungary, before Audi's dry-sump version goes into the R8 and Lamborghini's into the Gallardo.

Every R8 GT carried its own number on the gearstickAudi capped production of the R8 GT at 333 cars when it launched the lightweight special edition in 2010, and fitted each one with a badge on the shift knob showing its build number. Thinner glass and sparing use of trim stripped around 100 kilograms from the standard V10 R8, while power rose to 560PS. It was, at the time, the fastest and most powerful naturally aspirated R8 Audi had built.
